Springer Opera House 103 10th Street The Springer Opera House, the State Theatre of Georgia has been a leading Southern cultural institution for 135 years. The Springer is one of America’s most vibrant professional theatre companies, with a popular mainstage series, an innovative second-space series called Studio II, an Academy Series featuring some of the region’s most talented student actors and a ten-state regional touring program called Springer Theatre On Tour. It is also home of the nation’s finest training school for young actors, the Springer Theatre Academy.
RiverCenter for the Performing Arts Located in the heart of historic uptown Columbus, the RiverCenter is the centerpiece of the city’s new arts and entertainment district. The 240,000 square foot state of the art facility includes the 2,000 seat Bill Heard Theatre, the center’s main venue and home of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the 450 seat Legacy Hall and the 150 seat Black Box Studio. The RiverCenter hosts attractions such as Broadway shows, symphonic concerts, dance performances, pop concerts, lectures and conferences.
Columbus State University RiverPark Campus www.colstate.edu The Columbus State University’s world-class performing arts campus is located along the river in historic downtown Columbus. The fine and performing arts campus is made up of the University’s music, theatre and art department. The new art and theatre complex houses a lighting lab, a costume shop, a design studio, woodworking spaces and almost a dozen spaces customized for art study, work and display. The development also includes Theatre on the Park, a new stage for students in CSU’s nationally recognized Department of Theatre and the Corn Center for Visual Arts, the home of galleries that will feature the work of visiting artists and students in CSU’s Department of Art.
Heritage Corner Museum Tours 800 Block of Broadway Daily tours are offered through the heart of the Columbus Historic District, inviting you to escape into the past and tour five significant historic homes all located on one block. Included on the tour is the home of Dr. John S. Pemberton, originator of the formula for Coca-Cola, as well as home dating from the early 1800s to 1870. These specially arranged guided tours include an early 1800s pioneer log cabin and an 1828 federal style cottage. Tours are offered daily at 2:00pm. Coca Cola Space Science Center 701 Front Avenue This attraction takes students, visitors and corporate groups on simulated space missions with the Challenger Learning Center. The Omnisphere Theatre is designed for laser light shows, interactive media performances and programs featuring the night sky. The Mead Observatory operates several telescopes providing an array of special programs including regular public observing sessions, coverage of major astronomical events such as eclipses, comets and meteor showers. The Center is also a venue for live productions, musical concerts and special events.
Liberty Theatre 823 8th Avenue www.libertytheatrecolumbus.com Liberty Theatre, opened in 1925, was the first African American theatre in the city and served as an influential place of entertainment for 50 years. The theatre was restored and reopened in 1996 as the first African American arts institution and musical playhouse in Columbus. The facility is now used as a performing arts cultural center for the entire community, and hosts several musical events and plays throughout the year.
Ma Rainey House 805 5th Avenue The Mother of the Blues, "Ma" Rainey, was born Gertrude Pridgett in a poor neighborhood of Columbus, Georgia, in 1886. Her family recalled that "she was singin' soon as she was talkin'." This is the last home of Columbus resident Gertrude "Ma" Rainey. She was instrumental in the development of modern Blues. The Friends of Ma Rainey are in the process of renovating this residence into a museum to recognize the contributions "Ma" Rainey made to the world of American Blues music.
Port Columbus Civil War Naval Museum 1002 Victory Drive Port Columbus is an impressive, 40,000 square foot structure that features two original American Civil War vessels, as well as uniforms, equipment and weapons used by the Union and Confederate Navies. It is the only museum in the nation that tells the story of the two navies during the Civil War. The museum also displays their extensive collection of naval art and artifacts. It is a must see stop for Civil War enthusiast and attracts visitors for all over the United States.
The Columbus Museum 1251 Wynnton Road The Columbus Museum is particularly known for its concentration of American art and regional history. The 86,000 square foot facility displays 15 permanent collection as well as traveling exhibition galleries of fine and decorative art. The museum offers many educational opportunities such as classes, free programs and space for student art. Visitors can also investigate a kaleidoscope of color and texture in a hands-on discovery gallery for children.
